    AnKing vs in-house lectures: cover the gaps in your course

    Keep your AnKing foundation and build a lecture-specific study set. Use your slides to find gaps, generate Anki cards, and practice course concepts.

    AnKing can cover a topic well and still leave you searching your professor’s slides the night before an in-house exam. The missing piece is often the course-specific framing: a diagram, an emphasized exception, or a comparison your lecturer expects you to make.

    Give each resource one job

    AnKing gets what outlives the course: the mechanism and the classic presentation. The lecture gets what this professor did with them, their framework, their diagrams, the exception they spent four slides on. One r/medicalschool student counted 80 slides of GI histology heading for 300 cards where AnKing has about 100, and a reply gave the reason: what counts as high yield changes from professor to professor. After the AnKing pass I ask which objectives are still uncovered, and one of four things happens.

    • AnKing already asks the right question: use that card
    • Same concept, different emphasis: add one lecture card
    • Lecture-only detail: a card only if it is in the objectives or the professor repeated it
    • Same wording twice: keep the clearer one

    Build the lecture layer second, and keep it small

    Start with the AnKing cards you already use for the topic. Compare them with the lecture objectives and mark which relationships you still cannot answer. A new lecture card earns its place when it tests a distinct fact or decision you need for the course.

    Let practice questions find the gap

    Matching cards tells you whether a fact exists in a deck. It cannot tell you whether you can use it the way the course asks. A short set of practice questions from the lecture shows where the shared knowledge stops, and the ones you miss are a better card-making list than the slides. The tool does not know what your professor will pick, the questions are not NBME items, and it can leave something out or get it wrong, which is why the slide sits under every answer.

    When you cannot have both

    Some schools mix in-house and NBME exams in one block. A student on r/medicalschool described that setup, and one reply said they abandoned any interest in higher grades once they realised they could not have it all. Whether you can afford that depends on grading. True pass/fail lets you drop the minutiae. Letter-graded courses usually do not. When a first-year DO student on Student Doctor Network asked whether AnKing plus Boards and Beyond alone would get them through professor-written exams, a faculty member replied: "You're gambling that your professors will be sticking close to the ANKI cards and B&B videos."

    Either way the trap is the same: every AnKing card plus every lecture bullet is a review load nobody sustains. Pick the foundation, add the smallest lecture layer that covers the objectives, and leave time for questions and sleep.

    Understand the gap before you schedule it

    No. Keep AnKing for the shared foundation and add a small lecture layer for what your course emphasises.

    Can it skip cards AnKing already covers?

    You can provide an existing .apkg in the upload workflow and the generator fills gaps around it, but still read the result for duplicates.

    How big should the lecture layer be?

    Large enough to cover the course objectives you need, with duplicate prompts removed. There is no fixed cards-per-slide ceiling. Check the generated deck against both your existing cards and the lecture.
