How to study

    How to study effectively: understand it, recall it, apply it.

    Rereading notes produces familiarity, not memory. The students who score highest per hour do three things in order: understand before memorizing, test themselves on a schedule, and practice applying what they know to new problems.

    The research

    Two findings the framework rests on.

    After 20 minutes, 42 percent forgotten. After one hour, 56 percent. After a day, 66 percent. After a month, 79 percent, with no review in between.

    Ebbinghaus memorized nonsense syllables and timed how fast he forgot them. Each successful retrieval flattens the next curve, so reviewing on a schedule, rather than when you feel like it, is what beats it.

    At five minutes the re-readers scored higher. At one week the test-takers scored about 50 percent higher.

    Two groups studied the same passage for the same total time. One re-read it four times, the other read it once and took three recall tests. The re-readers led at five minutes and were far behind a week later.

    Each covers a different way of failing. Without understanding you memorize the wrong thing, without retrieval you forget it, and without application you cannot use it once the question is worded differently.

    Pillar 1

    Understanding

    You cannot remember what you never understood.

    What it means

    Your brain stores meaning, not bullet points. A lecture you understood survives review. One you only outlined is gone in a week.

    How to do it

    Go through the material once in a form that explains why, not just what: a narrated walkthrough or the textbook chapter. Hold off on flashcards until the logic is clear, or you will memorize the wrong thing.

    Active recall

    The act of retrieving a memory is what makes it stick.

    What it means

    Pulling information out of your head with the answer hidden, on a schedule. Re-reading and highlighting do not count. Retrieval practice is one of the best replicated findings in learning research (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006).

    How to do it

    Turn what you understood into question and answer pairs and test yourself daily. Anki is the standard tool because it schedules each card against the forgetting curve (Ebbinghaus, 1885). Keep cards short, one fact each.

    Application

    Knowing a fact is not the same as being able to use it.

    What it means

    Recognizing a definition is a different skill from matching a vignette to the right diagnosis. Most lost exam points sit in that gap.

    Mix vignette-style questions into the week, not just the cram block before the exam. Sort each miss the same week: a single-fact gap goes into Anki, a pattern gap means more questions.

    How the pillars combine in a real study week

    The first time you meet new material the pillars run in order. After that they overlap. A week looks roughly like this:

    • Lecture day: understanding pass. Read the slides once alongside the narrated story or the textbook section. No flashcards yet.
    • Same evening: encoding pass. Turn the material into question and answer pairs and let Anki schedule them.
    • Every day after that: do the due cards. Twenty minutes is fine. This is not a workout.
    • Twice a week: 10 to 30 vignette-style questions on whatever you are currently learning. Check the misses the same day.
    • Weekend: sort the misses. A single-fact gap gets more cards. A pattern gap gets more questions.

    What is active recall?

    Is active recall better than re-reading?

    Yes. In Roediger and Karpicke (2006), students who tested themselves recalled about 50 percent more of a passage a week later than students who re-read it for the same time. The gap grows with longer delays.

    What are the principles of active recall?

    Retrieve before you look. Space reviews across days rather than minutes. Mix related topics instead of blocking one at a time. All three work against the forgetting curve.

    How is active recall different from spaced repetition?

    Active recall is the technique (testing yourself with the answer hidden). Spaced repetition is the schedule (reviewing at growing intervals). Anki does both.

    How long should I study each day to use active recall well?

    Quality of retrieval matters more than hours. Do your due cards daily and a block of practice questions a couple of times a week. An hour of real retrieval does more than an evening of re-reading.
