    Spaced repetition for medical students: make lectures stick

    Use the forgetting curve, active recall, and Anki to revisit what matters. Turn one lecture into explanations, flashcards, and practice questions.

    You understood the lecture on Monday. By Thursday, the mechanism looks familiar but you cannot explain the next step. Another pass through the slides feels productive. The real test is whether you can produce the answer with the slide closed.

    Spaced repetition gives that answer another appointment with your memory.     The forgetting curve explains why one pass is not enough

    Ebbinghaus studied how retention changed after learning. A modern replication found a similar pattern of forgetting using lists of syllables. The general lesson is useful: access to newly learned material can weaken with time. Your pace of forgetting depends on the material, prior knowledge, and how you studied it. Read the replication.

    For a lecture, that means the first explanation is the start of the work. Plan later opportunities to recall the mechanism, compare similar concepts, and correct what you missed. You do not need to reread every slide every time.

    Active recall is what you do when the card comes back

    Spacing answers when. Retrieval practice answers what: try to produce the answer before you see it. In experiments with prose passages, students who practiced retrieval retained more on delayed tests than students who spent that time restudying. That is the study principle behind answering a prompt before revealing it. Roediger and Karpicke, 2006.

    A useful prompt asks for one clear decision. Say the answer, then reveal it and grade what you actually recalled. If the answer is five partly remembered facts, split the prompt or make the requested list explicit. Recognition of the revealed answer is not the same as recalling it.

    What Synaptic Recall does, from understanding to application

      Generate focused questions with short answers and supporting explanations. For slide uploads, source images let you check the original material. Download the standard .apkg, inspect the cards, then import it into Anki for repeated retrieval.

      Practice: use the idea in context

      Answer exam-style questions generated from the lecture. Compare your reasoning with the explanation and the discussion of the other options. Revisit the source slide when you missed a distinction or guessed correctly.

    Let Anki schedule the deck you import

    After import, your Anki settings and review responses determine when each card returns. If you enable FSRS, it models memory from your review history and uses your desired retention setting to choose intervals. Higher desired retention generally means more reviews. Start with a workload you can sustain and consult the Anki Manual before changing scheduling options.

    Do not treat an illustrative “day 1, day 3, day 7” routine as a universal prescription. Different cards and learners need different intervals. Answer honestly, let the scheduler use that feedback, and make room for the cards already due before adding another lecture.

    Use explanation, feedback, and comparison deliberately

    The explanation is there to help you reconstruct why an answer makes sense. After reading Story, close it and explain a mechanism in your own words. After revealing a card, use the supporting explanation to repair a specific misunderstanding. After a Practice question, identify the clue that separates the right answer from the alternative you chose.

    Once individual topics make sense, compare nearby ideas or work questions from different topics in your course. You are practicing the choice between concepts as well as each fact on its own. Choose the topics to mix based on the distinctions your course asks you to make.

    A lecture workflow you can repeat next week

    Start with one lecture you already need to study. Generate its materials, compare them with the learning objectives, and check unclear statements against the source. Then choose the next action by the problem you actually have: explanation when the mechanism is unclear, retrieval when you cannot produce a fact, application when the vignette still fools you.

    On later days, work through due cards in Anki and return to explanations when mistakes reveal a gap. Keep question practice in the week. When the review load grows beyond the time you have, reduce new cards and repair duplicates or vague prompts. Choosing a manageable lecture deck explains how to balance coverage with that budget.

    Quick answers

    Does Synaptic Recall use the forgetting curve?

    It supports a workflow motivated by forgetting and retrieval: explain the lecture, create recall prompts, and practice applying it. The exported Anki deck can then be reviewed on Anki’s schedule. Synaptic Recall does not measure your personal forgetting curve.

    Does the exported deck use FSRS automatically?

    FSRS is an Anki setting. Importing a Synaptic Recall deck does not enable or configure it. Your Anki scheduler and review settings control the imported cards.

    Should I understand a topic before using flashcards?

    If you cannot explain the idea behind a card, work through the relevant Story section or source first. Then try the card with the answer hidden. Use both explanation and retrieval as your understanding develops.

    Will this improve my exam score?

    Retrieval practice has research support, but we do not have a controlled study establishing a score improvement from Synaptic Recall. The practical benefit to test is whether you can start useful study sooner and keep reviewing the material.
