    Forty cards from one lecture sounds manageable. Ten lectures later, that is 400 new cards competing with everything already due. The number that matters is how much useful retrieval you can keep doing as the block moves on.

    Start with coverage, then judge the count

    There is no universal number of cards per lecture. A short slide deck can introduce many unfamiliar distinctions; a long deck may repeat one mechanism in several diagrams. Students in the discussions below report very different counts. Those experiences show variation, not a validated target for your course.

    List the learning objectives and the important relationships taught in the lecture. Can you answer a clear question about each? If a card only provides context, that context may belong in the explanation. If removing it loses a distinct retrieval target, it still has a job.

    The review budget sets your pace

    New cards produce future reviews as well as work today. Watch how long your current due queue takes before increasing the new-card limit. The amount you can sustain depends on difficulty, your responses, scheduling settings, and the time available.

    Remove wasted reviews without losing the lesson

    Two cards are duplicates when they ask you to retrieve the same thing with the same useful context. Two cards about the same disease may test different relationships and both be necessary. Cut repetition carefully.

      Match cards to objectives

      Identify which taught facts or decisions each question tests. Keep required material that has no other retrieval prompt.

      Make the answer gradable

      Ask for one specific relationship, or state exactly how many items a list requires. Put the longer teaching explanation after the answer.

      Suspend overlap

      Keep the clearer duplicate. Suspending a card in Anki preserves the option to bring it back later.

      Revisit confusing cards

      If you repeatedly miss one, inspect the source and explanation. Decide whether the problem is the wording, your understanding, or a fact that needs more practice.

    Leave room to understand and apply

    A deck can test isolated facts while leaving a mechanism unclear. Use Story to connect the steps, then close it and explain them yourself. Use Practice questions to find the distinction you still miss when the wording changes.

    When a question reveals a gap, return to the explanation and the slide. Repair that gap in the deck if needed. This makes the three outputs part of the same study session rather than three piles of material to finish.
